With me, it’s always personal. Whether I’m trying I’m reading a client’s employee training manual as if my first day frying chicken is tomorrow or I’m moving onto a boat I saw on TV. I learn best by doing, so I’m almost always doing something.
In the summer of 2012 while working on an Olympic-sponsor client, I started thinking about how many products were the “official” ____ of the Olympic Games. I asked myself “I wonder if someone could live and use exclusively Olympic-sanctioned products?” So I gave it a shot and the 5 Ring Diet was born.
Feb 2, 2013, I saw an episode of TLC’s Four Houses that featured artist Victoria MacKenzie-Childs and the 1907 Ellis Island ferry she lived on in Hoboken. A few weeks later, I visited the boat and immediately decided I wanted to live there. Since I had a full-time job and no actual nautical skills, I convinced them to bring me on as their social media crew member. What was originally supposed to be a month turned into six months of magic, adventure, chaos, and creativity before I decided to move back to land.

When Wafels & Dinges announced they were holding a contest to name the next Wafel King & Queen, I knew I needed have my progeny say they were descendants of the Wafel Queen of New York. And no royalty should half-ass it. So instead of taking my year of free wafels and free roundtrip tickets to Brussels and walking away, I made the most of it. Over the year, Wafel Royalty made appearances at the private residence of the Consul General of Belgium, reached out (and got a response from) the Belgian Royal Family, participated in Bike for Africa, cut ribbons, participated in several photo shoots, and had our royal portrait in every wafel cart in the city.
When one of NYC’s best local pizzerias mentioned they get 2,000 trick-or-treaters every Halloween, I asked if I could hand out candy…and dress the store up to go with my costume.
